Blackening Seasoning

Blackening seasoning is a technique of cooking as much as it is a seasoning. Hailing from New Orleans, Blackened Seasonings are a Cajun inspired mixture of onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne, paprika and other spices. Combine these spices with melted butter, brush the mixture onto meat or seafood and put the product in a hot cast iron pan. The butter will burn in the seasoning creating a blackened char on the surface of the meat.  It’s oh so crunchy on the outside and oh so tender on the inside. Try blackening any of our fish, like tilapia or catfish, or pound flat a chicken breast, and give it a good blackening.

You can purchase a premade seasoning that’s labelled blackening or blackened seasoning or you can make your own mix at home. There are plenty of great recipes out there that you can use to make a blend that’s as spicy or mild as you would like it to be.  We particularly like our Cajun Blackened Chicken recipe for the flavor it brings to boneless skinless chicken breasts. Give it a try soon!
