Za’atar

Za’atar is a name for a Middle Eastern spice mixture that is referenced back to Biblical times. The mixture is made from dried, ground herbs frequently found growing in the Middle East such as thyme, oregano marjoram and mixed with salt, sesame seeds and sumac. The mixture can then be combined with olive oil for use as a dipping sauce or applied directly to meat as a seasoning.

It is common to eat za’atar and olive oil on pita bread, or to sprinkle the seasoning blend into yogurt to make a dip. We love it on chicken or pork tenderloins. Za’atar gives any meat a big aromatic boost and adds herby and woodsy accents. Look at some of our recipes and try using this ancient spice blend at home!
