hahn gsm review
Hahn is a family owned winery that helped pioneer the growing of world class wine grapes in the Central Coast of California. Well known for their SLH Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Hahn family also makes a range of other wines for every day drinking. As a multi-generational family winery, Hahn is dedicated to sustainability, and has achieved the SIP (Sustainable in Practice) Certification. The GSM is inspired by the Rhone blends of Southern France, and is made with 60% Grenache, 37% Syrah, and 3% Mouvedre.
This wine has a ton of aromas coming out of the glass. I get a wide range of red fruits, but mostly raspberry and strawberry. The wine is smooth and rich, with lots of red fruit flavors. I get some leather and black pepper flavors as well, and these probably come from the Syrah portion of the blend. The finish is quite pleasant, and has plenty of smoothness from aging 40% of the wine in new oak.
The Hahn GSM is normally around $12-15 and I think it represents a great value for an every day drinking wine. A winemaker can often incorporate more complex flavor at a lower price in a blend than in a single varietal wine, and this wine is a great example. If you like red blends, give this wine a try. It’s a slightly more traditional and well made version of the commercial red blend, without becoming too dry or overpriced!
hahn gsm food pairing suggestions
This is a great wine to drink after work or at a party. It’s smooth, yummy, and delicious. Beyond that, it’s a fabulous pairing with grilled foods. I think the fruitiness contrasts well with grill food “char” for a good pairing, and I think the spicy part offers a complement to well seasoned grilled foods as well. Any wine that offers both contrasting and complementary pairing elements is a winner in my eyes. Here a few picks:
Beer Can Chicken – crispy seasoned roast chicken skin with this wine is a total winner!
Grilled Pork Chops – This blend won’t overwhelm the pork flavor, and add some fruitiness to the flavor of a grilled chop.
Smoked Baby Back Ribs – sweet, tangy BBQ sauce and smoky rib flavor match perfectly to this wine.
Grilled Flat Iron Steaks – Flat Irons are affordable and very tender – the smooth texture of the Hahn GSM is a great match to this dish.
Santa Maria Tri Tip Steak – Tri Tip steaks are a big hit in California’s Central Coast, and the seasoning matches perfectly with the Hahn GSM.

Wine Enthusiast – an 88 (Very Good) point review for the 2016 vintage.
